Oakmont Country Club

About the Oakmont Country Club

Located at 1233 Hulton Rd, Oakmont Country Club is one of the most prestigious golf clubs in the country.  featuring one of the hardest courses in the world. The club brings major championship venue to the Pittsburgh area. Many come to this historical site of championship golf to watch the U.S. Open or one of the other tournaments it hosts. The United States Open is set to return to Oakmont in 2025. The club also features a fitness center, a pool, dining and banquet rooms, and golf practice facilities for members. Many enjoy the historical atmosphere it has considering it has been hosting championship golf since 1919, only sixteen years after it opened in 1903.

One of the most identifiable parts of the golf course is the dreaded "church pews" bunker. It is widely considered one of the toughest hazards in golf. The course itself features no water hazards and very few trees. The real difficulty is caused by many bunkers and severe slopes on the greens. Many of the best players in the world struggle to shoot par and the slightest flaws in any player's game will be exposed by Oakmont's brutal fairway speeds and thick rough in addition to the tough greens. There are only two par 5's on the course, limiting scoring opportunities. It also does not help that both par 5s are over 600 yards, with hole 4 featuring the church pews bunker that is so feared by even the world's best golfers. Another recognizable feature of Oakmont that almost everyone can see are the bridges that pass over the PA turnpike. The bridges serve as both a cart path and a walking path for fans during major tournaments.

The grounds crew works very diligently to upkeep the  beautiful golf course. Heavy rains during the 2016 U.S. Open really put them to the test. Oakmont also offers internships for grounds crew. Click here to see what it takes to maintain Oakmont and to learn more about the grounds crew internship program.

Traditional values such as strict dress code and limited use of electronic devices still persist. For example the dress policy and hat policy states "Our dress code requires collared shirts or mock turtlenecks, slacks or shorts. Shorts are to be no more than one inch above the knee. Jeans and other denim clothing are not allowed anywhere on Club property. Gentlemen are required to remove hats on porches and in the clubhouse." To read the policy in full, click here

Oakmont and the U.S. Open

Oakmont Country Club has a storied history of championship golf. Since the 1919 U.S. amateur open, it has been home to many of golf’s most important tournaments and has presented some of the biggest challenges. H.C. Fownes, and his son, W.C. Fownes Jr., founded the club in 1903. Their goal of making Oakmont one of the most challenging courses in the world has certainly been attained.
