Sneak Peek for George Westinghouse Memorial

Proposed by Westinghouse Workers in 1914 and built in 1930, the Westinghouse Memorial stands behind Flagstaff Hill in Oakland. The pond was already in place from the 1890s before the Westinghouse sculptures were added and greenery was updated. The sculpture depicts several Westinghouse inventions including the application of alternating current to homes and train system advancements. A sign nearby goes into more depth about his inventions and treatment of workers. Westinghouse is surrounded by a factory worker and engineer to honor his emphasis on his workers—giving credit to all. A young boy stands on a pedestal, looking up to Westinghouse for inspiration.

The memorial is surrounded by Schenley Park trails and is located not too far from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. There are several benches for resting along the trail to take in the view. The warmer months allow the colorful flowers and trees to thrive. Wildlife surrounding and behind the memorial can be heard during your visit. Colder months are less inviting but the pond area can still be enjoyed!

Immortalizing the Industrialist

As my classmates and I stood in front of a bronze memorial, I couldn’t help but ponder the history behind it —a history that is not well-known. The monument is comprised of two pieces, with the first being an inventor and an engineer framing a man deeply engrossed in his work. The second piece is a standalone statue of a young man, shoulders back and chin up, looking at the aforementioned. I became enraptured by this youthful man because of the hopeful, buoyant look in his bronze eyes.

Westinghouse memorial and park

The United States is one of the countries with an appreciation for activities and events which rotate around its fascinating antiquity. This is my impression of the United States before I visited the country. Before my visit, I needed to understand George Westinghouse better and had not heard about him. When I learned that our visit could lead us to Westinghouse Memorial and Westinghouse Park this semester, I began to prepare appropriate materials. He was a well-renowned and one of the most outstanding engineers whose work cannot be disregarded in the development of America.
