Sneak Peek for Westinghouse Park

Nestled in the Homewood neighborhood is the historic Westinghouse Park. The park was named after engineer and inventor George Westinghouse Jr. Westinghouse resided with his wife, Marguerite, and their son, George Westinghouse III in their home, which Marguerite nicknamed "Solitude." Solitude stood from 1867 to 1919 and was demolished, becoming a Pittsburgh Public Park.

Today, the once-private land of the Westinghouse family is now a place for all families to enjoy. The park features a state-of-the-art children's playground, new picnic benches, and plenty of green space perfect for any time of year. The park is also one of two arboretums in Pittsburgh, featuring trees that are decades old. Westinghouse Park is a picturesque location that can be enjoyed in all seasons.

The park also hosts a variety of family-friendly events, including the "What's the .5K" and Wheels and Wellness. These events are meant to engage the community and keep Westinghouse's legacy alive.

Neighborhood

An Icon of Pittsburgh’s Industrial Past and a Symbol of the City’s Innovative Future

Westinghouse Park embodies Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s rich industrial history and its transition from a polluted “Steel City” to an innovative urban center driven by world-class universities, technology jobs, and eclectic neighborhoods. The park is situated between Pittsburgh’s Point Breeze and Homewood neighborhoods. It can be enjoyed in all four of Pittsburgh’s seasons, from a stroll on a crisp fall morning, to a picnic on a sweltering late summer afternoon. During the summer it would not be hard to find a shady tree to sit under.

Pittsburgh's Forgotten Industrialist

As you pulled yourself out of bed this morning, ran around the house, and prepared for the coming day, it’s likely you weren’t thinking about George Westinghouse Jr. Westinghouse, an American industrialist from the late 1800s, founded 60 separate companies and was awarded over 360 patents throughout his life (Westinghouse Nuclear). Today, many essential components of commerce and comfort are the product of Westinghouse’s work.
